BALYA (an aboriginal word for healing) is a non profit organisation, incorporated in 1992 whose aim is to:

• offer people with a diagnosis of cancer, their families, supporters and carers a full range of services and information, and support, to enable them to participate in and make informed decisions about their condition and treatment
• educate health professionals and the broader community about cancer, its prevention and its treatment
• provide the necessary psychological, medical and spiritual support to enable patients to fulfill personal goals and meet the significant lifestyle changes they will face
• offers the opportunity for some "time out" from everyday routines and stresses, and to relax in a peaceful, quiet setting to consider how to deal with cancer in an holistic way

BALYA is managed by a voluntary committee of seven people with expertise in health, psychology, business and social work. Balya funds a caretaker at our retreat house as well as one part time secretary to provide administrative support for its activities and has a very strong and stable volunteer support base.

The establishment of Balya was in many respects a response to the community environment in relation to Health services broadly, and Cancer services specifically.

We are seeking more volunteers to join our very strong and stable volunteer support base. Volunteering with us gives you the opportunity to contribute to making positive changes to the lives of those dealing with cancer.
